Gender is defined by one's self. It is based on:

  • social behavior

  • emotional conditions

  • personal experiences

  • psychological functions

  • cultural influences

THE FACTS:

Gender and sex are NOT the same thing! They influence each other but they are not dependent on each other. They can act alone.

"He" and "she" are not the only pronouns a person has to use! A common gender neutral pronoun is "ze."

Transgender and transsexual are not synonymous terms! A person who is transsexual wishes to change their sex to represent their gender in a more accurate way. A person who is transgender may be very comfortable with a sex that is opposite from their gender. Do not confuse these two terms!

Sexuality and gender are strongly linked, but they still can stand alone! Just because a male is homosexual, does not necessarily mean his gender is feminine! He may be comfortable with a male sex and gender and still be interested in other males romantically. Never make assumptions!

Gender comes in many different shades and intensities. It is not always dramatic and evident, it can be very subtle! A person may be female and mostly feminine, but that doesn't mean she is always a woman. Everybody can have quirks or behaviors that reflect a different gender; this is what gives us diversity and makes up every tone in the gender spectrum.

People across the world fight to defend their gender variance every day. It is escpecially evident in schools, where kids struggle to express themselves and are subjected to torment and bullying because people do not understand the beauty of gender. Major areas of gender ignorance can be seen in:

  • polls and surveys

  • public restrooms

  • television shows

  • day-to-day conversations

  • everywhere!
