VOCABULARY

Here you will be equipped with the proper vocabulary necessary for understanding gender and gender variance. The section will also help you avoid awkward or offensive conversations with gender vairant co-workers and peers. 

Genderqueer - a person who defines their gender in a way that does not match their sex (gender variant)

Cisgender - a person who defines their gender in a way that matches their sex (gender normative)

Gender - the social, cultural, emotional, and mental identity a person designates to themselves in terms of masculinity, femininity or lack thereof

Sex - the physical state of being male or female; determined by genitalia and specific anatomical characteristics

Cisnormativity - the general assumption held by a society that all its members' genders match their sexes

Transsexual - a person who is not satisfied with the sex they were born with and seeks to change it

Transgender - a person who identifies their gender in a way that is the opposite of their sex

The Gender Spectrum - the array of stages of masculinity, femininity, and neutrality, that represents all possible genders that can be identified by a person
